In 2005, Ontario Power Generation contracted MEDATECH to make major repairs to a recently commissioned nuclear waste transporter. The transporter’s hydraulic steering and braking system as well as the steering linkage had failed with minimal hours of operation. MEDATECH was commissioned by OPG to redesign and rebuild the steering and braking system.
Through the process, MEDATECH proved to Ontario Power that they could work to nuclear industry standards and provided Ontario Power with valued solutions to the problems associated with the vehicle. MEDATECH has been working with Ontario Power as a consultant on all of the nuclear transport fleet.
MEDATECH provides engineering support for all aspects of the transporter fleet and also conducts rework and retrofits to the vehicles when required.
After years of maintaining the variety of carriers’ and reviewing their strengths and weaknesses MEDATECH and OPG decided to design and build the GEN-4 “New Generation” of nuclear transporters. MEDATECH acted as the technical design consultant on this project and had a major contribution to the design. This vehicle is designed to carry waste and waste containers weighing 80 tons at speeds up to 20 kph.
