PROJECT
Battery Electric Truck (BET) WS4900XD
Customer: MEDATech Engineering
About The Project
Mining haul trucks are some of the hardest-working vehicles in the world. Your average haul truck emits upwards of 400 metric tons of CO2 on an annual bases while burning over $100,000 in fuel. With the Western Star 4900XD, a vocational truck common in the mining industry, our aim was to prove that battery-electric powertrains can tackle the most demanding industrial jobs.
Solutions
We started by stripping all of the internal combustion engine (ICE)-related components off a stock Western Star 4900XD and installing a MEDATech ALTDRIVE powertrain. It’s a modular, scalable battery-electric system, and the only battery-electric powertrain with an automated ultra-fast charging option.
We used two TM4 SumoHD electric motors that produce 518kW continuous / 744kW peak power and 3938Nm (2904ft-lbs) continuous / 6888Nm(5080 ft-lbs) peak torque. Power reaches the rear wheels through a MEDATech Single Transfer Case. We added 310kWh of battery, capable of a 620kW (831 horsepower) continuous power discharge.
Results
Range and haulage for the BET WS4900XD were impressive:
Unloaded Vehicle Weight | 17,150 kg |
Unloaded Vehicle Weight + Trailer | 37,581 kg |
Gross Combination Weight | 109,581 kg |
Grade and distance, unloaded | |
---|---|
0% grade at 42 km/h | 55 km |
2% grade at 42 km/h | 36 km |
5% grade at 42 km/h | 24 km |
Grade and distance, loaded | |
---|---|
0% grade at 42 km/h | 22 km |
2% grade at 42 km/h | 13 km |
5% grade at 42 km/h | 8 km |
*Range may vary depending on variables such as ambient temperature, driving style, loading etc.
The 4900XD can be configured with dump box, other single-axle configuration, or with a fifth-wheel setup and side-dump or rear-dump trailer.
Fast charging
The truck is equipped with 100kW of onboard charging capability, which will charge the batteries from 10% to 90% capacity in 2.5 hours. It can also be configured to accept a 600 kW offboard charge from the ABB eMine™ FastCharge high-power DC and fully automated charging system. This system could charge the batteries from 10% to 90% in 25 minutes. Fast charging enables vehicles to run without disrupting normal duty cycles.
