MEDATech specializes in converting heavy-duty mobile industrial equipment from diesel to battery-electric power. We work with end equipment users like Teck Resources and Newmont Mining to convert the machines they use every day. We also collaborate with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) such as Kovatera and MacLean Engineering on single-vehicle and fleet conversion projects.
We help companies reach their goals of enhancing operational efficiency and improving health & safety while reducing greenhouse gases (GHGs). Our ALTDRIVE battery-electric powertrain technology is well known for its reliability and performance; you will find ALTDRIVE-powered industrial vehicles hard at work around the world.

Conversion Options
From pure battery-electric conversions to hybrid machines, we offer flexible diesel-to-electric conversion options designed to meet the rigorous demands of any industrial environment. Our team of engineers, technicians and mechanics can take your conversion project from feasibility, to estimate, to build right here at our base in Collingwood, Ontario. We typically handle on-site commissioning as well.
If you prefer to manage the build, we will provide you with a hardware and software package tailor-made for your needs. ALTDRIVE system components are pre-assembled into sub-systems and configured specifically for your machine, then tested. This reduces installation and commissioning costs, and optimizes system effectiveness.
Options
Pure Battery-Electric Powertrains

- Configured for high energy output to extend operating range and minimize downtime for recharging.
- Configured for high power output to maintain performance under heavy load conditions.
Hybrid Systems

- Integrates a managed diesel range extender that automatically starts and stops as needed to charge the onboard battery system.
- CAN J1939-controlled for seamless integration into existing fleet management systems, ensuring ease of operation and maintenance
Charging Infrastructure

- A comprehensive range of charging solutions tailored to mining and heavy-industrial operations, including fast-charging capabilities to minimize equipment downtime
Feasibility studies can point you in the right direction
A machine’s duty cycle is of critical importance when it comes to battery-electric vehicles. It will influence the power needed, the range required, the location of chargers and other factors. All of these variables influence the amount and type of battery required.
MEDATech Vehicle & Fleet Electrification Feasibility Studies do two things:
- Show the optimal (and most economical) battery-electric powertrain configuration for any vehicle or fleet based on duty cycle.
- Accurately forecast the costs and the savings of electrification versus diesel, including reduction in GHG emissions and annualized carbon tax savings for your jurisdiction.

We calculate the exact type and quantity of battery required for your machine’s anticipated duty cycle. In our approach, the machine you get will be 100% optimized for the job it needs to do.
One of the other most important deliverables of a MEDATech Feasibility Study is an apples-to-apples cost-of-ownership analysis (diesel versus electric vehicles) broken down into cost per tonne (or other metric) and total savings, per year, per level, over the life of the operation.
Feasibility studies provide a clear, comprehensive understanding of:
- Cost in $/tonne of production (or other metrics)
- Proper fleet size to meet productivity goals
- Energy costs & energy mapping
- Charging requirements & charger mapping
- Carbon footprint improvements

Conversion is often the most cost-effective path
Converting existing diesel-powered vehicles to battery-electric power is often the shortest and most economical path to reducing GHG emissions and improving health & safety. Most industrial vehicle lifespans include at least one engine change, so why not make your next change electric?
The many benefits of battery-electric equipment include reducing fuel expenses, optimizing machine performance (greater power) and substantially reducing maintenance costs. Taken together, the health & safety, environmental, operational, and potential financial benefits of battery-electric vehicles form a compelling argument for making the switch.
Optimize with telematics
Industrial telematics is the collection and transmission of machine operating data for analysis. It’s not new; many OEMs use it to gather information on their machines. What is new is the kind of system-agnostic telemetry that MEDATech builds. We enable telematics for any piece of equipment that has a control area network (CAN) system.
When we retrofit a new or existing machine, we will install the right telematics system and present the data that you want to see. Telematics provides information for analysis, ultimately serving to make decisions that can reduce cost and lead to smart preventative maintenance that cuts downtime. As more data is gathered over months and years, trends and patterns become easier to spot.
